Jennifer Salling--Port Coquitlam 2008 Olympic Women's Softball Team

We wish to congratulate Jennifer on being selected as 1 of 15 players representing Canada on the Women's Softball Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  She is a Port Coquitlam resident and Terry Fox Secondary Grad and it is quite an honour for our community to have her represent us both nationally and internationally.

Let me begin by telling you a little about Jennifer's tremendous athletic achievements and where it all began, here in Port Coquitlam!  As I understand it, it all started the day she picked up her first bat and ball and took a swing, -- mom and dad said "we're putting this girl in softball"!

As time went on she played for the Poco Ravens and was known for her exceptional defensive skills.  In 2004 and 2005 Jennifer was named Female Athlete of The Year, this included achievements for top defensive player in basketball, and top offensive player in volleyball.  She earned the honour of MVP in both volleyball and basketball and was named All-Star shortstop on Team BC, boasting the squad's top batting average.  Jennifer has been the recipient of such scholarships as the:

  • AAA Minor Softball Scholarship
  • Poco Minor Scholarship
  • Ashbrooke Quality Assurance Scholarship

Currently, Jenn attends the University of Oregon and as a freshman shortstop was named the 2007th Louisvile Slugger / NFCA All American first team.  Last year she led Oregon's team, the Ducks, to the postseason and a 44-19 record, Oregon's most victories since 1989.  I could list off a number of very impressive stats including five individual records for the Ducks, the fact that she led her conference in RBIs and a batting average that was second in the league but I think the fact that she was voted by her teammates as the Most Outstanding Player and Offensive MVP, not to mention the first player in the program's history to be named PAC-10 Newcomer of the Year, gives you an idea of how very impressive she is on the ball field.

The road ahead for this amazing young athlete and her teammates will most likely be exciting, but yet, truly a committment worth the effort.  Currently, the Canadian Team is ranked 5th in the World, based on their finish at last year's ISF World Championships.  They expect to be in the thick of a battle for a podium finish in Beijing.  Podium finishes in 2007 include:

  • Bronze at the World Cup
  • Silver at the Pan-American Games
  • Silver at the China Cup; and
  • Gold at the Universaide

This Port Coquitlam Olympian's training will begin by travelling to Los Angeles in late January, where she and Team Canada will play several games against NCAA competition.

They will then move to Australia in March and continue training at the site of the 2000 Olympic Games in Blacktown, Australia.  April and May are set aside for specialized training before Team Canada regroups in early June and make their way to Surrey, BC for the Canada Cup in July.

We are very proud that Jennifer has been selected to play on the Women's Softball Team.  It is not uncommon for athletes to list larger cities, like Vancouver, as their place of origin, but Jennifer Salling is always specific in acknowledging Port Coquitlam as her hometown.

We wish Jennifer and the 2008 Olympic Softball Team all the best in the coming months ahead, but especially in August 2008.

I would like to thank the City of Port Coquitlam for the above write-up.  Jennifer was presented with the "Certificate of Recognition for Excellence in Sports".

Criminal Record Checks

Coaches Reminder:  All coaches must have a Criminal Record Check completed before the start of the 2009th softball season.   We will have the forms at our Observation Day so please make sure that you pick one up.  Coaches who do not comply to the Poco Minor Softball Association league requirement will not be allowed to coach until the paperwork is handed in.
